World Trade Center, Barnyard announced: Paramount has announced a December 12th street date for Oliver Stone's World Trade Center and the animated Barnyard (featuring male cows with udders). Both will feature commentaries, deleted scenes and featurettes, as well as a MSRP of $29.95. In addition, World Trade Center will be released in high def with a MSRP of $39.95.
Da Vinci to street on 11/14: Sony Pictures is prepping two versions of The Da Vinci Code for November 14th. The two-DVD edition ($26.95 MSRP) will include 90 minutes of features, including individual pieces on stars Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou and author Dan Brown, a look at the locations and cities where the film was shot, interviews on how the cast felt working near the Mona Lisa, a two-part discussion with director Ron Howard on the challenges of bringing the book to the screen and more. An $81.95 (MSRP) Gift Set will include a working copy of the cryptex and a reproduction of Robert Langdon’s journal featured in the film. Hidden inside the cryptex is a clue and a chance to win a trip to Europe and other prizes, and the replica can be customized and reused with the user’s own secret code. Robert Langdon’s journal is a full-sized reproduction of the movie prop containing notes, symbols and codes used in the book and movie.
Cleanup: As those of you who receive our newsletter are aware, this week we are upgrading our servers. Although we expect no interruption to our service, you may on occasion be unable to connect, or you may experience sign-on or other issues with the public VideoTropic pages or our extranet. We are targeting all changes to be complete by Wednesday, September 6th. Thank you for your patience.
Paramount noir: On June 6th, Paramount releases two seldom-seen films from their film noir catalog. Ring Of Fear is a programmer set in the circus world (released in 1954, two years after Paramount's Greatest Show On Earth wond the Oscar for Best Picture). It costars Mickey Spillane as a detective and circus impresario Clyde Beatty as himself, and may also be the only film noir ever to feature a drunken clown. 1956's Man In The Vault, a crime thriller with William Campbell and Anita Eckberg, was produced by Batjac productions, John Wayne's company; Paramount will also be releasing two other Batjac westerns, Track Of The Cat (1954) and Plunder Of The Sun (1953).
When is that new movie coming
to DVD? June Horror: Expect the DVD releases of
Slither and Disney's (!) Stay Alive, along with The Shaggy
Dog (which couldn't have been more of a horror film if Lindsay Lohan was in
it). ATL, Larry The Cable Guy, and She's The Man will also likely street
in one of the year's slowest DVD months. Things will pick up in August with
V For Vendetta (and if sales are strong, expect a double-dip
Collector's Set for the week of the Fifth of November), Scary Movie 4,
Lucky Number Slevin, the derivative Take The Lead, and the
inexplicable American Dreamz. September will see Hard Candy (a twist on Audition), the Sentinel
remake, and one or two early-summer blockbusters; more on that in a few
weeks. For the complete list of when current theatrical features are expected on DVD -- before they're officially announced, and before you'll hear about it anywhere else -- click here.

30% off any item at Borders this weekend: A new 30%-off coupon is now available, good off the regular retail price of one item (book, CD or DVD -- including box sets). It is good at Borders today through Sunday, April 30th. Print it out, then bring it to your local store for the discount; this offer excludes previous purchases, purchase of gift certificates, non-stock special orders and periodicals.
Amazon in deal with TV networks: Amazon's subsidiary, CustomFlix Labs, has inked a deal with NBC-Universal and other TV networks to offer DVDs of television shows soon after they air. The deal will likely begin with the availability of niche-audience archived shows such as Antiques Roadshow and the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, but may expand into offering DVDs of television shows within 24 hours of airing, similar to iTunes.
Brokeback set for April 4th: With a surprisingly short two-week solicitation cycle (normal is six weeks), Universal Home Entertainment has announced an April 4th release date for Brokeback Mountain. The $29.98-MSRP DVD will include a documentary in which stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal discuss their preparations for the film, such as training for a rodeo and for wrangling; a profile on director Lee; and interviews with screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.

Now that the Oscar nominations are out, the studios have
begun jiggling the release dates of their films, with those scoring the most
noms in the key release weeks following the Awards on March 5th, and those films
failing to garner nominations in the filler dates. Harry Potter and
Howl's Moving Castle, their release dates held due to the Olympics,
will both street on March 7th, the Tuesday following the Oscars. King
Kong, Memoirs of a Geisha, Good Night and Good Luck and
Capote are all due the end of March, and expect Brokeback
Mountain and Munich for the beginning of April. Narnia
has been set for April 4th, and Hostel has been officially announced
for April 18th. In the unannounced category, April will also see The
Producers and The New World, and expect Underworld
Evolution and Nanny McPhee at the end of
May (both will likely get the same release week, as they are aimed at different
audiences).
